You can’t be everything at once, focus on one thing and make it count.

Jasmine was a girl I knew had great potential. Then, in secondary school, she had so many qualities that convinced me of how successful she was going to become in the nearest future. Oh!! she was such a go-getter. After our secondary school, I found her doing digital marketing, I wasn’t surprised she took up such a skill immediately, even when most of us, her mates were yet to figure out whether we wanted to further school or learn skills like hair-dressing or fashion design. It wasn’t long before I saw Jasmine hop into telemarketing from digital marketing, she immediately switched to programming. Waw, I was really amazed at how much she could do.

The following year, I got admission into the uni. There, I saw my dear friend jasmine, she said she had become a public speaker. Amazed I was, but then I couldn’t help but get worried for her. I knew how determined and resourceful she could be, but then, the whole energy was not being channeled properly. It wasn’t up to six months before I saw my dear friend doing comedy skits. I knew her to be everything, a comedian was not near any of them. Well, I reacted to her posts to encourage her, but still, I become more worried. Less than one year, my dear friend posted on her WhatsApp status, that she had become a model. Outrightly, I knew I needed to talk with her.

I enquired why she was trying to do so many things at the same time, and what really was the driving force. My friend broke down and told me how she just wanted to do great things, make a name like others and be her own boss. Eventually, she got confused about which of her potentials to harness, since she was gifted with more than one, but obviously not perfect in any.

Jasmine is you, yes you, trying to do so many things yet perfect at non, Trying to be everywhere yet nowhere.

One problem with people who have multiple potentials is that they are not able to diligently focus on one or two of their potentials and grow them. The interest to try everything and know everything is what births “jack of all trades, master of non”.

Be known for one thing and become a master in it.

Take life one day at a time, and learn to maximize each of your potentials one after the other. Trying to be and do several things at the same time is as good as gathering wood that you will definitely not need, so why the load? You will only succeed when you are able to focus on a particular thing, Groom, and grow in it. Ever seen a man who is into so many things? He never gets far in any of them, as he would if he had focused on a few.

If you want to grow, go far and succeed in life, you must have an identity, and you cannot have that by wearing multiple hats at once. When you try out one potential, ensure you have given it your best before you pivot. Stop confusing your helpers when they come. Stop confusing the people that follow you. Stand firm for one thing and become known for it. That’s the strength of an achiever.

Just Start, Stay Consistent and you will definitely win.

Cheers.

I took over my boss’s job within two months of employment. When I got appointed in my former place of work, The first person I came in contact with, was the admin. Well, it wasn’t such a pleasant meeting as I noticed discomfort after I told her I was assigned to assist her.

At first,  she said I wasn’t competent for the job and called me a rookie and underaged. Days ran into weeks and she began heaping all her duties on me. You can say I was doubling both as the admin, and assistant at the same time. Literally, I was carrying out her duties for her. You may want to ask, what then was she doing? Well, Dish orders and passing files!

Eventually, the rookie became a pro.  I got so good at my job that I didn’t need her to pass files to me, I went to get them myself. she soon began to like me, Obviously because she saw me as a relief of her duties while she still received her salary and still answered the admin title.

Because I was competent enough,  she would skip work for days while I fill in for her. I carried on with my duties diligently without minding her laxity to work. Every one of my colleagues that needed her attention always came to me instead of her.

One day,  I overheard them saying that they preferred working with me to Her. Gradually she began to lose her relevance. The big news broke two months after. I emerged as the new administrator and branch manager. It wasn’t a surprise to anyone except my boss, who was either going to work as the front desk officer or quit her job.

What happened to her? Well, obviously she lost her relevance while letting another carry out her duties for her. She felt I was a newbie in the system, but never thought I will learn and grow. She didn’t consider what I must have known before coming into the system and my adaptive skills. She only saw my presence as an opportunity to hide from work.

This story is illustrative in our various workplaces. Some of us think because we have worked in a workplace or an industry for a long time, we can’t be outshined. Listen, no one is the monopoly of excellence and as such, don’t think you are irreplaceable. The company doesn’t care about you as a person, they care only about the value you are able to bring to the table.

At every given time and duty, show yourself worthy and deserving. Don’t sleep on your skills, if you do, you may lose your relevance to those that are awake and consistent with the grind. Some of us, have PAs. Your PA can replace you if you let them do what you are supposed to do, simply because you are paying them to assist you. Assist you, fine, but don’t heap so many duties or responsibilities on them, such that they can render you irrelevant.

There are people whose minds are actively ready to tap and harness. Look down on anyone at your own peril. Keep developing, keep emerging, and don’t give room for negligence. Whatever you are called to do, put in your best, not your least. Last note; When you stop growing, you lose relevance and when you lose relevance, life becomes worthless. Don’t let yourself die while alive!!!

So While you’re alive, keep living, keep reading, and keep improving.

Stay Relevant.!

Yahoo Yahoo is a Nigerian English slang that refers to a young fraudster. A yahoo boy in Nigeria is a young person that carries out various forms of fraud especially advanced fee fraud (also called 419) through the aid of the internet. The word was gotten from an American Internet company, Yahoo!, whose free e-mail accounts are most times used by these scammers to send fraudulent emails to unsuspecting users.

The Position of Yahoo Yahoo in Nigeria at the moment

Yahoo yahoo is cyber-crime, as it involves young people scamming unsuspecting victims (called Maga) of their hard-earned monies. It’s not something we’re supposed to be proud of as a country, even though a lot of irresponsible parents are encouraging their wards to go into it since it’s an avenue for quick cash.

In 2009, Multiple award-winning Nigerian singer, Falz heavily criticized Yahoo yahoo and he suffered a heavy backlash for it.

Falz said,

“I’ve always said it from the beginning and maybe I was the first person to get a backlash on this. I’ve never been a fan of celebrating cyber-crime. When I said it in an interview, it got me a lot of backlash. I will say it again and again; cyber-crime is wrong, cyber- crime is giving us a horrible name especially outside Nigeria.”

He also went ahead to say,

“ It’s destroying our youths and a lot of people are feeling it’s the only option. I understand the sentiment of people not being not privileged and feeling like they don’t have the opportunity and they feel this is the fastest way to get money. But people are out there actually putting in the effort, toiling, and struggling to make it by doing legitimate stuff and not just stealing from someone else.

One thing I believe in is “live your life, let others live theirs as long as your life does not affect another person negatively”. So long as you are taking from someone else, that is an offense even against humanity and it’s bad. I’ve never subscribed to it and I’ve never been a fan of celebrating it”.

A lot of young people in our nation today must come to the realization that even though Yahoo yahoo is popular, it is still not the proper thing to do.

Yahoo yahoo is a fraud, and a scam and includes all forms of cyber-crimes. But we see millions of young people rushing to join this fast life. It’s baffling and a thing of concern for lots of young people to want to engage in crime, without fear of the consequences of their actions. The question leading the conversation now becomes: why are the youths attracted to this illegal trade? Could the urge to get rich quickly be responsible? Could this be attributable to the government’s inability to provide employment or is it due to moral decadence that is gradually eating up the social fabric of society? Unfortunately, what is more worrisome is the breakdown in family and religious values among the youths who now regard money as the ultimate in life, instead of hard work and the fear of God.

Who is a Yahoo boy?
There is a general disposition that any laptop-wielding or tech-savvy young person is into Yahoo yahoo (fraud) because by the way, this is the population demographic that possesses the major tools used by Yahoo yahoo guys, which are mobile phones and laptop computers. They became more noticeable with the advent of social media.

In a simple explanation, a Yahoo-yahoo boy is someone with a fraudulent disposition and mentality, with the aim of defrauding an unsuspecting person of his or her financial belongings using Internet-enabled devices like computers and phones to fulfill his personal and selfish aggrandizement. Their stock in trade is simply to defraud people of their money.

Yahoo boys seem to be the most patient creatures on earth when waiting on their maga, this is ironic because these boys (and sometimes girls) do not have the patience to go into legitimate jobs and wait for their hustle to pay off. Yahoo boys are ingenious in creating a make-believe business, selling fake properties or products on the Internet via Facebook, Instagram, and many other platforms.

Types of Yahoo boys
There are two types of Yahoo boys, and they are as follows;

  • G-boy
  • Yahoo plus(+)

  • G-boys: are the common internet scammers and they come in various categories with different formats, such as; Nigerian princes, online dating, military dating, Instagram scammers, engineering contract scams, , nude blackmailers, gift-card kings, cashapp legends, hospital patients, bitcoin scammers. These and more are the deceitful ways G-boys get monies from their victims (called Maga or Client).

  • Yahoo plus(+): are those types of yahoo boys who operate with charms. It simply means yahoo yahoo on an advanced level. These types of yahoo boys engage in juju/voodoo/occultism to assist them with their internet scam. They are of the belief that these jujus give them some sort of spiritual support and make them more successful in their internet fraud business. Some of these occult practices include; using human body parts for ritual sacrifices, walking naked in a market by midnight, bathing at road junctions at midnight, having sex with a mad woman, and murdering people for rituals. This set of yahoo boys do not live long, as it is an open secret that untimely death is usually part of their occult agreement.

In November 2022, Maazi Ogbonnaya Okoro II a popular Facebook user led a massive online campaign against Yahoo plus(+), and lots of unrepentant Yahoo plus(+) guys came to his DM to confess and he reposted their chats with their permission on his wall.

I will share just three of those Yahoo plus(+) stories here.

Story 1 –

“My Inbox Yahoo Story, A Lady Narrates how her Girlfriend Abandons her Boutique and moved to Lagos.

I have a friend, who was doing well she had a boutique here in my state, but one morning she woke up and sold everything in her shop when I asked her why? She said she want to relocate to Lagos because she heard she will do better there in Lagos.

Within 4 months of moving to Lagos, I noticed her lifestyle became luxurious going on vacations and even posting a car she bought and all of that. I asked her how she was able to do it and I am very sure you have not opened a new boutique over there and you have never posted any item for sale here.

That was when she told me about her new boyfriend who happens to be a yahoo boy, In fact, they were co-habiting.

Within a short while, my friend started having mental issues, today she posts this, and tomorrow she posts that. it was so obvious that she was not okay Upstairs.
The guy threw her out of his house, the worst is that she never reveal the identity of the guy to anyone because she felt girls will snatch him from her.
It was someone from our state who saw her roaming about on the street of Lagos
He contacted her family members.
She was bundled back to our state, Maazi aside from the mental issue, her private part is decaying.
At the moment she’s caged like a dog at the back of their compound.”

Story 2 –
“My Inbox Yahoo Story, A Man Narrates his Roommates Experience in Lagos.
Maazị Good morning sir.
Nda?
I would love to chip in my experience with the ‘Yahoo vila’
I’d try to make it as short as possible but cover the subject matter.
When we (Udoka, Ibe, and I) got to Lagos in 2012, after our youth service. The three of us rented a room from the little savings we had before our journey to Lagos. We got on Job hunting from one firm to the other, and had to contact a few agencies(we had to pay but got nothing, we had to settle for a teaching job). 20k monthly,

There was this guy (Dave) Ibe won’t stop hyping, ‘he’s a big boooooooi’… He was the talk in town…. Ibe had a future, he graduated with an upper credit. But quest robbed him. (He was not OK with a 20k job, got fond of Dave, and became Dave’s boy(Dave weh no finish high school oh).

Around April 2013, they told me they’d travel, although they didn’t detail me. Not up to weeks they got back…. On Sunday evening. The next day they went to the bank(no be one bank oh…. Like 8 banks or so, you know they came home with the forms….) Ibe was bragging about the amount of money that would flow into those accounts..  E no move me oh. All I’d say was ‘ometara vuruuuu’!!!!

That same weekend, Udoka told me he won’t be home (I was an enemy to Ibe, we no dey reason again).  I didn’t see them again, their numbers were not reachable. The next time I’d see them was after a few months… they showed up with SUVs. Baba language change, … E get one bar weh dey near my house then.  my guys shut am down, street dey drink… Dey chop… B like say dem open brewery for my street that day.

Maazi, e no funny oh, na my neighbours Wan finish me, ‘Ur friends don mak am u still dey dey follow us drag toilet’

*********************************

NOTE: I changed the real names of the guys involved to heed to the request of covering the subject matter.”

Story 3 –

“My Yahoo Inbox Story, A man narrates his personal story.

POST AS ANONYMOUS
Good afternoon Mazi, I was a part of YAHOO, I was introduced to it by my cousin brother who lives in Turkey. I wasn’t diabolical then, just a month into it, I picked $2000 Then after another 5 months, I picked £7000 without going to any Baba, that’s just a natural Grace.

Later on, My Friend and I  met a man, he’s a school proprietor in Amawbia and also an Anglican Reverend. He told us that he wants to open a HK, that we should gather boys for him that he has a strong Native Doctor, according to him our back up is sure( Strong Selina Man). We were 5 guys. We all went together to the native doctor house and he finished preparing the juju, He gave us a Ring that we will be wearing to work, All you need to do for the ring to be active is to always have sex and collect the substance coming out of the girl’s private part with the ring, you will just do as if you are helping the girl to clean up but she won’t know that you are doing another thing. we started working but none of us picked in the first three months and we always do as the Baba instructed.

I personally made another move and told him about another strong Spiritualist in Anambra. We managed to Enter another person’s Car and went to the place because he don’t want anything that will expose him that side and he knows a lot of people in that town too because of his Reverend work. We got to the man place, He finished with the consultation, He said that my Boss has to carry the highest ogwuamosu, and after that, we will work with my Boss’s grace, Mind you, my Boss doesn’t press, he only brings money for the work and did every ritual he was asked to do. He has 5 boys of which I am the youngest. Long story short, My boss carried did the juju and everything, It was done in the midnight (12 to 4 am). Among all the boys, I was the only one he carried to that place that night because he don’t want the other of his boys to be there so they won’t know the stuff the juju was made of.

Do you know that this man ate the heart of a Vulture?? Together with the blood. He has to also sleep with a girl the next morning so everything will start working but the doesn’t know that she has been used. I wasn’t afraid shaa because of the kind mind wey I get. We later went home, I have to narrate the whole thing that happened that night to the other boys and they were all afraid, a Reverend for that matter. He’s on this Facebook forming Holy Nwaeje and posting bible verses. We picked shaa but I know that the juju is dealing with him. SO CHUKWU MA ONYE UKA.”

These stories were directly picked from Maazi Ogbonnaya Okoro II’s Facebook wall, these are real life stories shared by victims and perpetrators to warn millions of young Nigerians to desist from a life of cyber-crime.

Reasons why we should all condemn Yahoo yahoo in Nigeria

  • Fraud is damaging our reputation as a nation among the international community.
  • Yahoo plus(+) encourages the kidnap and murder of innocent persons to be used for ritual sacrifices.
  • Fraud is destroying our moral fibre as a society.

Summary
Although the economy is not friendly and times are hard for us as a people, young people should be encouraged to do everything within their willpower to steer clear of Yahoo yahoo, as nothing good can ever come out of crime and evil. We as a people have a lot to do individually and as a nation, we need to encourage legit hustlers and stop broke shaming responsible and hardworking young ones. We should encourage and sponsor young people to learn how to generate passive and active income.

Starting your life in a rough situation whereby you lose everything, are discouraged, and are completely at a disadvantage, how do you see yourself? What goals have you persevered towards in your life? Do you aspire to be great in life?
You need to push yourself to be successful in life. You need to be ready to run the race by setting the goals you want to achieve.

Persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving set goals.

Perseverance is not giving up but being strongly dedicated, it is a good thing and it drives you to be better and helps you overcome your challenges. Marie curie said “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that?” We must have perseverance and above all, confidence in ourselves. You must believe that you are gifted with something and that this thing must be attained’’. It is a key to a great career.

Career refers to an individual’s chosen profession or a long-term plan based on passions and goals. Building a career is a lifelong process of improving your skills and talents in providing a sense of purpose for you. Many persons have begun their career while young, either in a higher institution or College. A career doesn’t need you to require a degree; about 50% of jobs between 2020 and 2030 will be occupations that don’t typically need an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree. As a person ages, their career goals and path may change due to family obligations, personal interests, or financial needs.

What stops You from Persevering in your career or dream?

Definitely, we will have things that will drastically make us feel like we can achieve our goals but if we don’t conquer them we won’t make it. What are those factors that hinder your ability to persevere?
1. Overconfidence
2. Fear
3. Procrastination
4. Lack of focus
5. Mood swings

1. Overconfidence
Excessive confidence makes you overestimate your ability or power. An individual decides not to read his/her books because he is brilliant and what he sees during the test shocks him or so much that he wasn’t able to write anything in the exam.

2. Fear
Fear is an unpleasant feeling of being frightened or worried about something/someone that has not happened. This is not the kind of fear that keeps us from walking down the road at night but the one that can keep you from growing. As a result of irrational fear, we feel we can’t do anything to improve ourselves.

3. Procrastination
The act of postponing or being slow about something that needs to be done. ‘That tiny voice in your head asks you, ‘’why do you bother? Why do you want to be who you are not? You can’t achieve your goals but until you meet people who have passed through that stage then you feel ready. You always have doubt about yourself, you follow your dreams today, and tomorrow you drop it until you just stop.

4. Lack of focus
Focus is the quality of having clear or fixed definitions. As an individual, you need to be focused because if you are not focused for a minute, you can’t be focused for an hour or even a day. When you are not focused you can’t persevere.

5. Mood swings
A mood swing is a sudden change in an emotional state. Moodiness will always distract you from persevering e.g. Anger, depression, Emotions, etc
As an individual, you need to control your level of perseverance. You just have to get all hands on deck and put things right.

How to persevere in your career

However, you have felt that in the past you haven’t made it or it’s taking a longer time than you expected, but you need to put in mind your perseverance is evidence that yes the road is tough and you still need that courage of developing yourself. The beautiful thing is that you might have failed so many times in the past, but the past is gone and the future is still ahead of you.

‘Life is not a bed of roses so you must keep pushing……

The following will guide us on how we persevere in our careers:
1. Determination
2. Commitment
3. Progression

1. Determination
By taking a step and making sure they are your dreams, Be Consistent and Disciplined.

2. Commitment
Be ready to fight it, zero your mind and stay focused.

3. Progression
Always try something new and take your time to fix them gradually until the necessary arrangements are being gotten.

Recommended Books on Perseverance
I personally recommend the following Books which I believe will help build up and re-ignite the fire you need to persevere in your career.
1. Feel the fear and do it anyway – Helen Keller
2. Grit – Angela Duckworth
3. Be Obsessed or Be Average – Grant Cardone
4. Relentless – Tim S. Grover
5. Beyond Possible – Nims Purja

Conclusion
Perseverance plays a vital role in achieving our goals and it helps build us daily. If you want a better career you need to remind yourself of how to get a better result and also persevere to avoid those things that wouldn’t make you achieve your dreams.
